Amway Update from the Distant Past…

So last week out of the blue I got an e-mail about one of the very first columns I wrote way back in the day, circa 2001 (aka the Just Laugh years). A loyal reader had stumbled upon this little gem and after reading it, was thoughtful enough to drop me a line to let me know that in the last eight years since I’d originally penned that early work of comedic genius™, the perception of said evil multi-level marketing scheme has significantly changed…

I just happened to come across you little diagram showing what you think about Amway. I don’t know how long ago this was but you were telling everyone how much you don’t know about this really big scam of a company. Did you know that this big scam company owns the Orlando Magic basketball team? Not the owners of Amway, but Amway itself. Yeah that play at the Amway Arena. Amway is written all over the floor and scoreboard. The business also brings in BILLIONS of dollars a year. In case you didn’t know, that is a lot of money because there are a lot of people that are making lots of money doing business with them. Maybe you should do more than Google something before you think you know what its about. I’m sure the attorney for the basketball team did, along with the 1,200 companies that have come to them for more business. Oh and they own Pieter Island and huge yatch club. Just though you should know before you continue sounding like an idiot on other subjects.

Now granted it doesn’t happen often, but when it does let me tell you that I always relish in the opportunity to update one of my works of yesteryear – it’s kind of like checking in on an old friend and noticing, “Hey, that overbite did end up straightening itself out finally!” So it’s with great pleasure that I’m able to present version 2 of the diagram from that fateful column, now expanded to more accurately reflect the business model of Amway and many other triangularly-shaped marketing programs today in 2009:

Sometimes it really is the details that drive that sale home, folks. Thanks for taking the time to write, Douglas! I have no doubt that you’ll be earning that Triple Diamond Deluxe Super-Awesome Sellers award in no time…
