WICHITA, KS (Just Laugh) – Administrators call it the perfect ending to a month-long celebration of African-American history, but most students just consider it an excuse to eat cake…
The fourth grade classes of Lewis Stevenson Elementary School in Wichita, Kansas have spent the previous weeks of February studying such icons as Rosa Parks, Maya Angelou, and Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. and their roles in the progression of culture and society for Black History Month, and so it only seemed right to end such a learning experience with a rewarding day of games and treats, the center of which being a delicious cake created in part by a consortium of mothers in the school’s Parent Teacher Association.
“We think it’s really great that the school was able to teach our children about all of important black people in our nation’s past,” remarked Cindy Hooper, the mother of 1- year-old Annie Hooper, who “has really enjoyed all of the neat movies that they showed us for Black History month.” Hooper, along with three other mothers, gathered last weekend to prepare the mammoth dessert that will be eaten by students, administrators and special guests at today’s celebration.
When asked about the cake itself, which depicts a yellow school bus on white frosting, PTA President Amber Slater replied, “We thought that the bus was something that the kids would connect with because they ride a bus each day, just like Rosa Parks did in that one story. And believe you me, we talked long and hard over it – a few people wanted to put MLK [Martin Luther King] on it – but Jennie … the mother who did the frosting … can’t really draw faces very well, so we just went with the school bus instead…”
Administrators plan to fill the students’ day with special games and guest presentations from local African-American entrepreneurs, with the cutting of the cake set at the end of the school day, just prior to dismissal. The Lewis Stevenson Elementary PTA prides itself in its involvements with the school’s special programs throughout the year and is already planning a carrot-shaped cake for its Easter Extravaganza.
